About Us

About the School of Defence

The School of Defence is a group of individuals working to maintain and develop the English and European combat tradition. This tradition includes elements of combat which are percussive (boxing), grappling (wrestling) and involving weapon systems ( primarily sword work). As much of the surviving western tradition is based around the use of the sword, most of this site is about sword use.

The School of Defence seeks to promote these combat traditions through demonstrations and training This is based on study of the historical written sources from different countries and historical periods which give us an understanding of the weaponry, techniques and philosophy of the time. Reference to these sources allows the School to maintain the high standards set by previous Masters. Yet books are only silent witnesses of the past; present Masters of Defence are the living embodiment of the Tradition so the School of Defence is based on the organic tradition of the Masters, who have learned and absorbed the knowledge of past Masters and seek to pass it on in a living tradition.
